The History of Cleethorpes

Cleethorpes was originaly made up of three small villages know as thorpes. They were called Itterby, Oole and Thrunscoe, and were part of a wider parish known as Clee.

The name "Cleethorpes" is thought to come from joining the words "clee", and "thorpes".

In the 19th century Cleethorpes was a fishing village but after the construction of the railway between the industrial towns of Yorkshire and the coast it grew rapidly into the popular seaside and holiday resort it is today.
